Prof. Stavros A. Karkanis, was born in
1964. He holds B.Sc. in Mathematics (1986) from University of Athens and Ph.D. (1995) from the Department of
Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Athens, entitled
"Recognition of Texture in Digital Images Supported by Multiprocessor
Architectures.". From the year 2002 till today he is Professor to the
Department of Computer Science at the University of Applied Sciences of
Central Greece (former TEI of Lamia). Prof. Stavros Karkanis has
worked for more that 11 years in the private sector
in various companies as HITEC SA, ORASIS-IT Ltd., Intrasoft SA in the period from 1987 to 1998. His
involvement was mainly a) in research projects funded by European or national
sources like GSRT and b) as a special assistant / senior consultant in IT
product development projects. During the period 1994- 2001 he worked as a
consultant researcher with the Laboratory for Optoelectronics, Department of
Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Athens in research projects
of the European Commission. In the period from 1996 to 1998 he worked as a
senior researcher with the Laboratory of System Reliability for Industrial
Security, Institute of Nuclear Technology - Radiation Protection, NCSR "Demokritos". The funded projects are included in the
corresponding financial framework of the European Union such as FP7, ISP,
BCR, ESPRIT, IMT, BRITE-EURAM, etc. but also to national funded programs such
PENED, PAVE, OP, NSRF etc. He has also served on committees (steering
committees) after a call for the development of financial research framework
of the European Union as BRITE-EURAM and IMT of XII N / Directorate. During the period September 2002 to August 2003 he
served as Head of the Department of Computer Science at the University of
Applied Sciences of Central Greece and in Sept. 2003 he was appointed (after
election) Director of the School of Applied Technology, TEI of Lamia. In
Sept. 2005 he was elected to the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs
at the TEI of Lamia and in Sept. 2008, President of TEI Lamia till Apr. 2013. The research work of Prof. Stavros A. Karkanis is presented by a total of more than 60 research
papers in peer-reviewed journals (eg IEEE, etc.)
and International and Greek scientific conferences in the area of digital
image processing, pattern recognition, medical and industrial applications
and biomedical image processing. He has participated as an invited reviewer
for journals such as IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, IEEE
Transactions on Neural Networks, IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IEEE
Conference on Intelligent Systems and Signal Processing (IEEE-ISSP 2013),
IEEE Conference on Pattern Recognition (IEEE-ICPR etc.), but also as external
evaluator at the invitation of international research organizations such as Institut National du Cancer, Cancer Biology
department-France, FWF Austrian Science Fund, etc. The recognition of
his research work is significant with more than 1000 citations by other scientists
to his work. From November 2011 to date Prof. Stavros A. Karkanis has established a Research Laboratory named
Decision Systems Laboratory (Decision Support Group -
dsg.teiste.gr) that belongs to the Department of
Computer Science of the University of Applied Sciences of Central Greece, in
which students can and are involved in research projects either funded or not
during their studies under the supervision of Prof. Stavros A. Karkanis. During
these years a number projects, that can be seen to dsg.teiste.gr, have been completed and
results from them have either been published in Greek and international
scientific conferences or have been discriminated and awarded at competitions
for innovative ideas in Greece and abroad. Prof. Stavros A. Karkanis
is married with Ms Athanasia
Tsakiri and his father of three children (boys)
